Kaizer Chiefs has been advised on what the club should do with the club's younger goalkeepers, as they continue to fight for regular game-time in coach Stuart Baxter’s team this season.

With Nigerian international goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi being Chiefs’ number one at the moment, Brandon Petersen has appeared to be the second-choice keeper under Baxter, while Khune and Bruce Bvuma are struggling to make the matchday squads, this despite the latter being called up to the Bafana Bafana set-up under Hugo Broos.

With Khune appearing to be out of the picture under the coach who made him Amakhosi captain when he worked with him between 2012 and 2015 at the Naturena-based club.

Indications are that Bvuma could be set to compete with Petersen for the second-choice spot throughout this season, while the Soweto giants are expected to make a decision on the 35-year-old Nigerian’s contract which is set to expire in June next year.

Former Bafana World Cup goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters – a big admirer of Akpeyi for his experience and form, is worried that with the Nigerian playing regularly at Amakhosi and keeping out Bvuma and Petersen, could be to the detriment of the South African senior national team.

“You have Daniel playing and doing well for getting a call-up to the Nigerian national team but it’s to the detriment of Bvuma and Petersen who are the up-and-coming goalkeepers (and) looking to cement places in the national team. So, it could jeopardize that at the end of the day,” said Walters, speaking to the Siya crew.

“I feel that, and I know I might sound a little bit bias, but I feel that either Bvuma or Brandon need to go and fight for regular game-time (elsewhere), because they are the next generation of goalkeepers that we have at the moment for the national team. Bvuma is part of the national team again, but he has not been playing as regularly as he should at club level,” added Walters.
