Hugo Broos has outlined his plans for Bafana Bafana, as he takes over as coach.

The Belgian mentor was announced as the new head coach of the South African senior national team on Wednesday afternoon. He takes over from coach Molefi Ntseki who was sacked after failing to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe confirmed that the 69-year-old has signed a five-year deal.

Speaking to the media after his unveiling, Broos said he needs to start working as soon as possible with the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers starting in June.

“First of all, I’d like to say that I’m very proud to be the coach of South Africa. It has always been a country in which I wanted to work and today it has happened and I’m very proud.

“I was a little bit surprised when I saw the selections of the last games that there were so many players of the age of 30 and more.

“I think we have to rebuild the team and build a younger team. I can give you the example of Cameroon. I did the same there, I worked with young players. Young players are motivated and hungry.

“I myself was a player, when you reach 30 you know motivation is less. After South Africa did not qualify for Afcon next year, this is the moment to rebuild the team.”

Motlanthe also confirmed that the coach will bring his own assistant and he will get a local assistant who will help him settle in.

The former RSC Anderlecht player also confirmed that he will rely on the local assistant for basic information.

“For me it’s really important that I will come to South Africa as soon as possible and meet my South African assistant. Because he has all the information I need at the moment.

“I will also look at several games South Africa played over the last months and with all the information I will analyse what this team needs.”

His first game will be against neighbours Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier on June 5.
